Can a sandwich be healthy?
Yes! Even for those of us wishing to lose body fat and gain muscle!
Often neglected as part of a ‘healthy diet’, the sandwich, for its simplicity, can be a great addition to any meal plan.
Over the years, bread has been seen as the villain for those trying to lose weight. It’s time to feel at ease around the faithful sandwich and start bringing it back into our nutritional plans.
Bread is often avoided because of its gluten content of which very few of us are intolerant to. Another reason is because it is a carbohydrate. And, carbohydrates are often seen as the enemy. However, ‘carbs’ are integral to providing energy to our muscles as well as helping to protect our muscle mass from being broken down.
Bread can be a great addition to a healthy eating plan. ‘Healthy eating’ is a phrase that has lost its significance. When I was taking my nutrition course, I was taught that the healthiest thing you can do is not carry excess weight. I was told that the food choices we make are somewhat irrelevant as long as we don’t consistently over consume calories.
I am not saying to and eat ‘anything’ but the principle is true. Calories are integral in managing our weight and the food choices we make are going to help with that.
Busting myths and social trends is what I like to do so I’ve put together a 6 week Move Well Eat Well course. Not only does this course educate on the fundamentals of nutrition, it offers a six-week exercise programme to help form great habits for a healthy future. What does healthy actually mean? A good healthy diet follows these principles:
- Calorie considerate to help manage your weight
- Protein rich to help growth and repair within the body
- Nutrient dense keeping you fit and well
- Quick and easy because I don’t like being stuck in the kitchen
The one dish that ticks a lot of those boxes is the sandwich. You can pretty much do what you want with it.
You can make it high protein, you can make it low calorie, you can add lots of salad to it for more fibre and nutrients; you can season or add flavourings to it and you can eat it on the go – handy.

Just 347 kcal and a whopping 30g protein per sandwich.
